The total tells you size, not shape
Saying a workout is 2,000 m gives you one useful fact: total volume. It does not tell you how those metres are arranged or how hard they are meant to be swum.
A 2,000 m session built around 20 × 100 m at a steady pace with short rest is not the same as a session where half the distance is technical work and a few 25s are very fast with generous recovery. Same distance, very different demands.
Find the main set first
To understand a workout, identify the block carrying the main purpose. Repeat length gives you an early clue. Sets of 200s or 400s often support more continuous work; 25s and 50s can be used for speed, technique, or pace changes. Distance alone still does not decide the purpose.
Now add effort and recovery. Eight fast 50s with generous recovery can preserve more speed. Eight moderate 50s on a tight send-off create a much more continuous load.
Information
Two different 2,000 m workouts
Workout A: 400 m easy, 12 × 100 m steady with 15 s rest, 400 m easy. Workout B: 500 m warm-up, 8 × 50 m drill/swim, 8 × 25 m fast with full recovery, 4 × 100 m smooth, 300 m cool-down.
The total is identical. The first emphasizes continuity and consistency. The second divides the volume among technique, speed, and recovery. Comparing them by distance alone removes the important part.
The same volume can cost different amounts
How demanding a workout feels also depends on your current fitness, technical efficiency, and the chosen send-off. A set that gives one swimmer 20 seconds rest may give another only five. A 400 IM may be routine for one person and extremely demanding for someone else.
That is why a workout should not be chosen only because the total matches the number you had in mind.
Choose the purpose before the distance
When comparing two workouts, ask four questions: What is the main set? At what effort? With how much recovery? What quality am I supposed to preserve through the set?
Total distance still helps with time and overall workload. But it comes after purpose. A successful workout is not simply one where you accumulated the planned distance; it is one where the metres served the intended work.
