Novelty is not a measure of quality
A different workout can be motivating and useful. It is not automatically better simply because it is new. If distance, send-offs, and effort change completely every session, you collect experiences but very few comparable reference points.
Repeating a known structure reduces that noise. You already know where the session gets difficult, so you can notice what has changed since last time.
A benchmark set can be a simple test
Keep one block that is easy to reproduce, such as 8 × 100 m at a strong sustainable pace with 20 seconds rest. Record the times, but also the gap between the first and last repeat, stroke count if you track it, and especially the quality of your swimming near the end.
A few weeks later, repeat the set under similar conditions. If the times are similar but you finish with cleaner swimming, less fade, or better control, that is already useful progress.

Do not turn every repeat into an exam
Your benchmark does not need to appear every week. Used too often, it can turn training into constant testing and tempt you to force the result even when an easy day would be more appropriate.
Use it as a periodic reference. Between attempts, vary the training and develop the qualities you need.
Compare more than the fastest time
A single best repeat is affected by many things: fatigue, sleep, lane traffic, an overly aggressive start, or simply having a great day. Consistency can be more revealing. Moving from 1:42, 1:45, 1:49, 1:54 to a set clustered around 1:44–1:46 may show better control even without a personal best.
You can also observe how much rest remains on a fixed send-off, breathing rhythm, whether you can hold a technical cue, or how quickly you recover afterward.
Know when to change the benchmark
A reference set does not have to last forever. If the send-off becomes so comfortable that it no longer creates the intended challenge, tighten it slightly. If your goal changes, choose a different reference: shorter work for speed, a technical block, or a continuous swim.
The point is not to swim the same thing all the time. It is to keep a few constants inside the variety so you can tell whether the training is actually doing something.
