Two sessions can still build something
With two pool visits, each session carries more responsibility. It helps to cover your main priorities rather than devote a whole day to a very narrow detail. One workout might emphasize endurance and the other technique plus speed, for example.
Progress is absolutely possible, especially when the frequency is consistent. The main trade-off is that several days may pass between water sessions, so some technical sensations take longer to become familiar.
Three sessions create room to specialize
A third workout lets you distribute the load. You can keep one more demanding session, one technique or speed session, and one steadier session without trying to fit everything into the same hour.
It also becomes easier to revisit a movement or pace before the feel of it disappears completely between practices.
Information
Four only helps if you can absorb the fourth
A fourth session can increase technical frequency and weekly volume. But if it consistently cuts into sleep, leaves every day moderately fatigued, or prevents recovery from the previous workout, the theoretical benefit fades quickly.
The useful question is not “what number is optimal for everyone?” but “what number lets me swim consistently while keeping useful quality?”
Do not automatically double volume when frequency rises
Moving from two to three sessions does not require every workout to stay the same length. The new session can be shorter and highly focused. Thirty-five minutes of technique with a few fast 25s can complement two longer practices.
Frequency and volume are separate variables. Raising both quickly at the same time makes adaptation harder to read.
The best frequency is sustainable
Look at what you can repeat for several weeks, not what fits into one perfect week. Three consistent swims are often more valuable than a burst of four followed by weeks of one or two because the plan does not fit your life.
Start with a stable frequency. If recovery is good, motivation remains, and you genuinely have the time, add another pool visit and observe what changes.
